Pirate Warriors 3 is your standard Dynasty Warriors game with crap ton of playable characters and huge level of satisfaction, but can get repetitive rather quickly if you're not a fan of the genre. Missing a co-op from Playstation version.

There’s a long list of popular anime shows that have been converted into video game franchises—all created and influenced by a variety of genres, some garnering more success than others—One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 arrives as one of the more successful offshoots. Inspired by the ever-popular Dynasty Warriors franchise, One Piece offers players multi-skilled heroes from the show, following manga storylines, and all set with special abilities/playstyles to defeat thousands of foes across sprawling battlefields in ‘musou’ style engagements.

One or the Other

There’s an easy way to gauge if you will like One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3. Either you like the show for which its based, or you like Dynasty Warriors type games. If either, it’s worth a shot. If both, this is the game for you. Not alone in branching from anime series, One Piece shamelessly clings to the video game series it was modeled after. That isn’t a problem because, if done well, just as Dragonball Z Budokai modeled itself after any number of 1v1 fighters like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat—it can make the game exciting while offering familiar characters with familiar powers. That being said, as the third entry in this particular video game series, you can expect (much like the Budokai series, or Naruto Ninja Storm series) a rehash of all the shows story moments up to the point in the manga where this game was made. In this sequel’s case, the Dressrosa arc.

Cell-Shaded for the Win

As far as the art style of the game goes, it employs cell-shading like many other anime games to evoke the drawings of the show brought into a 3D world. However, beyond the character models, the game’s environments don’t offer up much to look at. They, though cut and past from the show, don’t grab the attention of the viewer or blow anybody away with set-pieces. That being said, the music designed for the game (not even a part of the show) is consistently exciting and in keeping with the tone. It keeps the energy up as your hero dispatches wave after wave of, very simple in their geometry, AI combatants. That being said, the endless waves offer up some good, mindless fun that in many levels reminded me more of Ninety-Nine Nights (another clone of the genre) rather than just Dynasty Warriors.

Simple Fun

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is a great entry to the franchise. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel in any way but it knows exactly what its offering to its players. With a great assortment of modes including couch co-op, there’s tons of hours of fun to be had. It doesn’t take much to get in and start playing—and that is one of the many benefits of the genre. There aren’t massively complicated combos, but there is no shortage of enemies with which to try the variety of combos offered by a plethora of characters from the show.

If you’re looking for a Dynasty Warriors clone, or are a fan of One Piece, this game is definitely worth checking out and, to be honest, just like the show it can function as a nice way to unwind after a long day of work.

Pros

  • Huge cast of characters with different movesets
  • Addictive combat against thousands of opponents
  • Multiple modes to keep interest (couch co-op!)
